On a hot Wednesday night the Markham Irish U18 Girl's took on Brampton at our home pitch for an 8pm kick off. The junior girls had had a rough start to the season being short on numbers, but after a great week of practises, they were prepared and organized for this match up. They hit the ground running with a Try from the strong #8 Anna Horner in the first minute of play and never looked back. She put down 2 more before half, while the captain Keely Patterson paced her with 3 Tries of her own. With the team half fielded with much less experienced players, the girls now had a chance to slow down their game and organize their defensive play. Markham had a strong line out lift and jumper Tianna Briere even stole a few of Bramptons' throw ins. Scrum Half Denise Laghayi put in 2 conversion kicks to bring the score to 34-5 at half.
The second half saw the girls get more comfortable on the field and find their stride and style working together as a team for the first time. Power house Flanker Kate McLellan and speedster Outside Centre Shaunte Andrew both earned themselves Try's in the second half. Many of the younger girls seemed to feed off the confidence of the more experienced players and stepped up to make some serious tackles and dominated in the rucks.
U16's Vivienne Chang and Isabelle Tam both scored their first Trys of the season while always remember to support each other on the runs. Two more conversions were made by Anna Horner and Lauren Blais. When the sun was almost fully set and the final whistle blew, Markham Irish had finished with a 73-15 win. Top Try scorer was their captain Keely Patterson with a total of 25 points under her belt. The girl's hard work is starting to show and the rest of the season will be building on the positives from this game. Great game by all on the field. Next U18 game is Tuesday night at Fletcher's against Barrie, 7:45 kick off.
